چکیده
A framework alternative to that of classical slope stability analysis is developed, wherein the soil mass is treated as a continuum and in-situ soil stresses and strengths are computed accurately using inelastic "nite element methods with general constitutive models. Within this framework, two alternative methods of stability analysis are presented. In the "rst, the strength characteristics of the soil mass are held constant, and the gravitational loading on the slope system is increased until failure is initiated by well-de"ned mechanisms. In the second approach, the gravity loading on the slope system is held constant, while the strength parameters of the soil mass are gradually decreased until well-de"ned failure mechanisms develop. Details on applying both of the proposed methods, and comparisons of their characteristics on a number of solved example problems are presented. Copyright ( 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Mesoscale analysis of failure in quasi‐brittle materials: comparison between lattice model and acoustic emission data
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the development and the evolution of the fracture process zone during fracture and damage in quasi-brittle materials. A model taking into account the material details at the mesoscale is used to describe the failure process at the scale of the heterogeneities. This model is used to compute histograms of the relative distances between damaged points. These...
متن کاملMulti‐slicing strategy for the three‐dimensional discontinuity layout optimization (3D DLO)
Discontinuity layout optimization (DLO) is a recently presented topology optimization method for determining the critical layout of discontinuities and the associated upper bound limit load for plane two-dimensional and three-dimensional (3D) problems. The modelling process (pre-processing) for DLO includes defining the discontinuities inside a specified domain and building the target function ...
متن کاملCoupling Geomechanics and Transport in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
Large amounts of hydrocarbon reserves are trapped in naturally fractured reservoirs which arechallenging in terms of accurate recovery prediction because of their joint fabric complexity andlithological heterogeneity. Canada, for example, has over 400 billion barrels of crude oil in fracturedcarbonates in Alberta, most of this being bitumen of viscosity greater than 106 cP in the GrosmontFormat...
متن کاملA 3D elasto-plastic FEM program developed for reservoir Geomechanics simulations: Introduction and case studies
The development of yielded or failure zone due to an engineering construction is a subject of study in different disciplines. In Petroleum engineering, depletion from and injection of gas into a porous rock can cause development of a yield zone around the reservoir. Studying this phenomenon requires elasto-plastic analysis of geomaterial, in this case the porous rocks. In this study, which is a...
متن کاملA Comparison of Underground Opening Support Design Methods in Jointed Rock Mass (TECHNICAL NOTE)
It is of great importance to consider long-term stability of rock mass around the openings of underground structure, during design, construction and operation of the said structures in rock. In this context, three methods namely, empirical, analytical and numerical have been applied to design and analyze the stability of underground infrastructure at the Siah Bisheh Pumping Storage Hydro-Electr...
متن کاملAn assessment of a semi analytical AG method for solving two-dimension nonlinear viscous flow
In this investigation, attempts have been made to solve two-dimension nonlinear viscous flow between slowly expanding or contracting walls with weak permeability by utilizing a semi analytical Akbari Ganji's Method (AGM). As regard to previous papers, solving of nonlinear equations is difficult and the results are not accurate. This new approach is emerged after comparing the achieved solutions...
